Coping with hearing loss in a hearing world

Mobile phones and telecoms

The issue of telecommunications and mobile phones is extremely complex - each person's hearing loss is unique so you may need to experiment with several models of telephone before you find the right one for you.  Phones for people with hearing loss can be purchased from many suppliers (see Equipment section) so please check the website of each manufacturer for information on the hearing aid compatibility of mobile phone models before purchasing.  Online forums are also a good place to find additional information.  Most reputable retailers allow customers to purchase mobile phones on a trial basis to check for compatibility with hearing aids.

For many of us, hearing a conversation properly on the phone has become our "holy grail".  Perhaps we can hear voices (or sometimes not even that) but we still can't distinguish the speech in order to understand it.  For us, and for those who have no hearing at all, technology is taking exciting steps forward with initiatives such as the Next Generation Text Relay Service, voice-to-text phone messaging services such as VoxSciences and exciting new apps coming onto the market including RogerVoice and Transcense (see our Apps page).

There is a huge amount of information already out there to help you and we constantly update our list to bring you links to the latest information, equipment and news about all things hard of hearing (HoH). We hope you find the Directory useful and if you have any useful links that you'd like us to add, please contact us.
